Power of Choice

Mansfield ISD has five STEM academies. These academies are centrally focused on immersing students in hands-on learning emphasized with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in mind. 

The Tarrant County College (TCC) Southeast Early College High School at Timberview allows students to be immersed in a college-going culture in all courses. The school also gives students an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and associate degree (up to 60 credit hours).

The fine arts academies will provide students with a rigorous academic environment while encouraging artistic exploration and integration. The program, which places a stronger emphasis on the visual and performing arts than is typically present in a traditional elementary and intermediate school setting, will give students the opportunity to delve deeper into the creative disciplines of theatre, art, music and dance.

The academies are offered to grades 3-6 and available by application only. Programs are located at Brenda Norwood Elementary School, Kenneth Davis Elementary School, Alma Martinez Intermediate School and Cross Timbers Intermediate School.

Placement into an academy is determined by the student's current attendance zone. All students wishing to be in the fine arts academy must apply, even if they are zoned to one of the schools. Upon the completion of the sixth grade year, students may return to their zoned comprehensive middle school campus or apply for a transfer to another MISD comprehensive middle school. (Please note, the submission of a transfer request does NOT automatically guarantee a seat at the requested campus.)

The Summit P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) Academy offers students the opportunity to pursue college credit, work-based learning and industry-recognized certifications in computer programming and software development. Students accepted into the program as ninth graders can obtain a Level I Certificate in Programming through Tarrant County College (TCC) while earning a high school diploma at no cost. 

Accepted students will attend the school-within-a-school for their entire high school career and benefit from real-world experiences like job shadowing, internships and mentorships through industry partner, Mouser Electronics. The freshman class will begin in August 2024 and will add an additional grade level each year.

MISD’s two-way dual language program (TWDL) allows Spanish and English native speakers the opportunity to learn two languages through cooperative learning and collaboration.

The program also allows students to be college and career ready by becoming bilingual, bi-literate and multicultural. The program is currently available at D.P. Morris Elementary School and Erma Nash Elementary School.

The Willie Brown Academy of Young Scholars has curriculum that focuses on growth mindset, social and emotional learning and college and career awareness. Those topics are incorporated with rigorous academic curriculum to provide students opportunities to communicate, create, collaborate and think critically.

Students at Louise Cabaniss Academy of Young Scholars have opportunities built into their daily schedule that focus on team building, character development, collaboration and growth mindset. The school provides all students a rigorous and engaging learning experience.

The Martha Reid Leadership Academy will challenge students to take ownership of their own learning and become leaders of today and future leaders of tomorrow. This school will develop students to lead locally, nationally and globally and to empower students to become productive citizens by preparing students for college and career, community leadership and purposeful living in the 21st century.

Students at the Elizabeth Smith Innovative Learning Academy have collaboration opportunities built in to their daily learning with lessons that focus on higher cognitive skills for all of its students (pre-kindergarten through fourth grade). The school focuses on the “Six C’s” of learning: collaboration, critical thinking, communication, creativity, citizenship and character to empower students to be global learners.

The Tarver-Rendon School of Agricultural Leadership will teach core content and leadership skills through agricultural-based experiences. The “Planting the Seed” program will include classroom and field experiences and opportunities to work with Ben Barber Innovation Academy agriculture students and staff. Students will also frequently access the Ron Whitson Science Agricultural Center and the Tarver-Rendon Discovery Park.

Donna Shepard Leadership Academy features unique programming and opportunities for students that include an engaging leadership curriculum built into the instructional schedule, an agricultural science leadership, a national elementary honor society, an art partnership program between general education and special needs students and more.

The purpose of Roberta Tipps STEAM Academy is to teach learners to explore, create and innovate by incorporating inquiry and design thinking learning through cross-curricular science, technology, engineering, art and math activities. Learners will engage in problem-solving using the Engineer Design Process fostering higher level thinking and reasoning skills. Learners will collaborate, communicate, think critically and create as they work on design challenges and explore STEAM.
